For the
second time in three seasons, Max Power was our champ. He deserved
it, providing us with some incredibly funny and sexy posts throughout the
year, as well overcoming drafting Pat Burrell (3rd round, .209 avg in 522
at bats) and Paul Konekro (5th round, .234 avg in 444 at bats). Who
knew these guys would have such a horrible season? Plus he overcame
the traditional Adrian Beltre draft pick (8th round, .290 OBP in 158
games). Being the selfish bastard that I am, I would now like to
take some credit away from Max and give it to myself. You see, at
the halfway point of the season, Max was in 14th place, and he had told me
that he had given up for the season. So I looked over his roster to
see what he'd done wrong and how he could fix it. Despite the
Burrell and Konerkoness, his team was pretty solid. I didn't
understand why he was below .500. So then I looked at his
schedule. Ah-ha! After crunching some numbers, I found out
that Max had the toughest 1st half schedule, and also the easiest 2nd half
schedule. That gave Max just enough reason to want to play again.
Max went 73-37-10 in the 2nd half, finishing in 4th place. Then in
the playoffs he ripped through winning by scores of 9-3, 6-4, and an 11-1
romp in the finals against The Barking Spiders.
We had 8 new teams in Year 3. Phaistos Raiders in just his first season, finished in 1st place. It's amazing how he even came into the league to begin with. When he first contacted me, we already had our 20 teams, and I told him thanks but we're full, I'll try to get you on board for next season. The day before the draft, our Year 2 champ, Beer Nuts, dropped out, opening the door for Phaistos. Other successful first year teams were The Barking Spiders, finishing in 3rd and making into to the finals, and Lee Ho Fook, with a 5th place finish. Year 4 is shaping up to be our best season yet. I can't wait for the newbies to come on board: Heavy Metal Thunder, Indians Fan, Chickenrapers, 1/2 Rob (DH), and Three Finger Brown. (They may change their team names in Year 4) All of these managers were successful in our first ever "minor league" experts league. I ran a full season experts minor league (I wish I saved the data), and a midseason experts league. From the full season minors, Indians Fan finished in first, and Chickenrapers finished in 3rd. From the midseason minors, Heavy Metal finished in 1st AND won the championship. Three Finger Brown finished 3rd, and 1/2 Rob finished 5th. Keep in mind these are 20 team leagues, and the scoring system and roster sizes are exactly the same as our experts league. |
